Outgrowing the b5media Basement
Jan 13th
It’s funny, of all the things I though b5 would become known for, our workspace was never one of them. However, as part of keeping costs down, Mark and I have been spending a fair amount of time huddled together in my basement. I think people started talking about it after Mark did a presentation at the Toronto Venture Group. Since then, everyone we talk to about office space is like “oohhhh, you’re outgrowing the basement, eh?”.
Well, as of Monday, a third musketeer is joining the Toronto b5media team. And we *are* outgrowing the basement! The third musketeer? None other than Gary King!
Mark and I met Gary at mesh last year. Gary rocked his presentation, and everyone was wishing he wasn’t in school so they could snap him up. So, when Gary’s internship came up and we heard he was looking for a Web 2.0 gig where he could get really deep into the business and not just be relegated to make-work projects in some dark closet (he can’t work in our dark closet, that’s where Mark sleeps!)… Well, we jumped at the chance to have Gary join the team.
Gary just accepted our offer, which means that our little 2-person space here simply won’t work… No, we’re going to need to upgrade the facilities. We’re moving up to the b5cave. The actual physical location of the b5cave is a pretty closely guarded location (by Mark’s wife, and she plays aussie-rules hockey so you don’t want to mess with her!), but we’ll have some pictures and such once we’re all settled.
For those who’re keeping track, this brings the b5 team to 10 (Darren, Shai, Mark, Aaron, Christina, Ben, Chris, Tris, Gary and moi), 5 of whom are full time.
Crazy. We have a couple of more positions to fill, at which point we’ll work at introducing the entire team, what everyone does, etc. After all, I know the curiosity of what it takes to run a major blog network is eating away at just about everyone ;-) (I kid, I kid, the real reason is just that I’m incredibly proud of the team we have and I want to highlight how much they all rock!)
It Take A Great Team
Nov 4th
It really does take a great team to build a great company, and b5 has one of the best teams anyone could ask for. Great founding team, amazing CE’s and fantastic bloggers. Every person in the company continues to astound me with their passion and dedication to making b5 all it can be.
This week, though, one team in particular has done an absolutely amazing job. The Tech team, led by Aaron Brazell has tackled massive obstacles this week and come out largely on top.
3 weeks ago, the team was given 2 large projects, both with a deadline of this weekend: buy, setup and move to a new server cluster and design a new b5media homepage.
I’m very, very proud to see that both projects were completed on time and exceeded my expectations. A huge, huge thank you to Aaron, Sean, Ben, Jonic, Brian and Mark for making these projects happen. Either of these projects would have stressed even the best team, and you guys pulled off both ahead of schedule.
Thank you!
Aaron has some more info on the new site as well as the new servers at his blog.
If you’ve ever had pressures based on tight deadlines, head over to his blog and congratulate him and the whole team. Ditto for Ben, who led the design work on the new site, thanks Ben!
My Funding Speech
Oct 18th
It’s not often I get to give speeches. So I was pretty saddened to find out that there weren’t like academy awards for raising funding or something. Not that b5 would necessarily deserve an award (ahem, yet), but I had one all ready and rarin’ to go.
So, lucky readers, you’ll have to hear it instead ;-)
First, I want to thank my mother and father, without whom this wouldn’t have been possible. When I was born at a young age they…
Okay, okay, I’ll stop. Seriously, though, I do have a bunch of folk I want to thank and recognize for their efforts raising funding. Raising funding is like getting married, writing a book and having a baby all at once. And all in 3-4 months. It takes a big team to do it, and a truly special team to get all the way through it. It’s totally worth it, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy!
First, my wife. Honestly. It’s been a long process and she’s been an absolute champion through all of it. Putting up with the ups and downs better than I did. Thanks babe :)
Next, to Rick Segal for putting me onto the idea of raising serious funding. I’m glad you stuck with us all the way Rick. It’s been a big learning experience, but I hope it’s been as worth it for you as it has for me.
Third, and in many ways most of all to Sean Wise. Bud, we wouldn’t have gotten into the Canadian Venture Forum without you, we wouldn’t have gotten “yes”s from the VC’s without you, and we wouldn’t have gotten through the process without you. I totally plan to write a great post on the main b5 blog later today or early tomorrow thanking you officially, but I wanted to personally tell you how much I appreciate your unique set of skills, contacts and patience with a young CEO like me.
I also want to thank the rest of the b5 founders. As I mentioned yesterday, it’s a real challenge going from a consensus-driven team to a slightly more structured one, but you guys were with me the whole way. I couldn’t have asked for a better team. It’s not always easy, but the mark of a great team isn’t that there aren’t bumps in the road, but in that we’ve gotten through them and that after each one we’ve gotten stronger. You guys rock.
Next, to all the folk who helped out practically during the funding. Some folk proofread docs, some dropped everything in the middle of the night to do research, others helped organize and some just listened while I bounced ideas around. It takes all sorts to get through a process like funding, and that we came out of it smiling is a testament to all those who contributed. I’m sure I’ll forget people, but in brief, thanks to Christina Jones, Aaron Brazell, Sean Walberg, Tris, Hsien, Rick Klau, Ingrid Diaz, Dave Ward, Marc Orchant, Mike Hillyer, Shel Israel, Stowe Boyd and many, many others.
Finally, thanks to our bloggers. It’s only been a year since b5 was founded, but we’ve accomplished so much in a year. I can’t wait to see what this next year holds as we stick together and see what we’re all made of (okay, that was cheesy, sorry).
I’ve been wanting to write this post for almost two weeks. So while I might be up on stage accepting this award, it’s thanks to all these people and all my fans that I’m up here at all…
;-)
b5 Funding & Broken Laptop
Oct 5th
So b5 landing funding last night. And 2 minutes later my laptop died. Like can’t even boot into Safe Mode died. So I’m having a little bit of a problem keeping up to date on the news, to say the least ;-)
Windows Vista Blogger Wanted
Sep 25th
b5media is seeking a Windows Vista Blogger for our Windows Vista Weblog. This is a great opportunity to get in on an existing money-making blog, as well as to have some fun with all the news about to come out on Vista in the next 3-6 months.
See the job listing if you’re interested! :)
