Last 12 Bugs
Jan 15th
Down to our last 12 bugs, at least for launch.
Should squash these no problem. Looks like we’re a go for launch, just need to write / design the demo and we’re set.
Definitely a huge feeling of relief to have all this done in a positive way before I go. I was really hoping to be one of those few people who left work happy (less than 12% of employees do).
Looks like it might just happen!
Wise Words for Today
Jan 14th
Wise words for today from the development company working on the new TACF website:
The more clever and unique the code the greater the odds that it will be accidentially overwritten after it is complete and working.
I’ll give you 2 guesses how we learned this lesson.
And, no, one of them isn’t “flamenco dancing”.
Work Site Update
Jan 14th
Well, the new site is progressing. After several more insane meetings and a lot of work on everyone’s behalf we are nearly there.
Of course, by “there” I mean the compromise that is “okay, here’s what we’ll launch with, but we’ll improve it after”.
I’m glad “after” is also after I’m gone. I hate managing projects post-launch because summoning up the motivation can be really difficult. Really, really difficult.
But, on a good note, I only have 5 more days of work left, so I’m already starting to get into the mode of my new environment.
A lot of the work at HSC is Novell-based, which will be rather new for me. I’d worked with Netware v3 (I think) way back in the day, but that was before eDirectory or anything. So, I’m having to get into the Novell frame of mind.
The main difference I’ve found between MS and Novell network / server management software is the way they “tick”.
MS software, typically, is very task-oriented. You want to do something, and you just do it. Novell software seemed, at first, very clunky. It seemed like it took many steps to do something simple, at least from an MS perspective.
Then I realised that Novell was really looking at trying to reuse tasks. Everything from patches to server optimization. It’s almost like Object Oriented server management. I think once I get used to it, and once a network is probably setup, that this could be much easier and more efficient (and easier to train someone on).
I won’t know until I get there, but I am looking forward to it.
Last Week, Eh?
Jan 12th
It’s my last week at work… Well, last full week. I have 7 more days of work left, counting today. And this comment feels all the more poignant the closer to leaving I get. I feel more and more like people don’t want my CO2 :- (
Really Good Week
Jan 9th
Despite a really rough start to the week, it’s gone incredibly well. I would almost be happy launching the site as it stands now. There are still minor improvements and some content things that need done, but I’m very happy with how far we’ve come in just a few days.
While I was gone it really felt like not much happened, so it was good to see the team pull together and get what needed to get done sorted out.
I wish I could name the team and development company here as they’ve really been fab.
