Ensight - Jeremy Wright’s Personal Blog

I’m the CEO of b5media, author of Blog Marketing and a hardcore Canadian (with all the good and bad that brings)!

Phew! It’s been a week since I started seriously looking at losing weight. In brief, here’s where I’m at:

  • When I started this I was sick. So, while I got down to a low of 230, it was my “sick low”. When I got better, I ended up adding a few pounds. It was hard, but it’s great now that I’m back down.
  • I’ve been doing short daily walks (10-15 minutes) just to get into the habit of it.
  • I’ve been generally keeping my calories down to about 1800 (sometimes lower, sometimes - like Tuesday where I went to McDonald’s - higher). This is from my previous average of 2500-2800. Considering a pound of fat is 3500 calories, this is a great start as long as I can keep it up (food is hardest for me).
  • Dance Dance Revolution (see here for info on how folk use DDR to lose weight) for the Xbox 360 was finally released yesterday. Picked it up and played (sadly… wanted to go to a friend’s wedding, but couldn’t find a babysitter anywhere… moving to a new city sucks, especially when you find an agency called “In A Pinch” and they need 24 hours notice). First hour on DDR was fantastic. It’s a lot of fun, challenging, and is obviously a great workout. Plus, it tracks calories burned, which rocks ;-)
  • Went to the gym for the first time today. I’ll be going Monday/Wednesday/Friday at 8:30am. Anyone who knows me knows the idea of getting up at 7:30 is … challenging ;-) I’ll be doing each workout with a trainer for the first 1-2 months, then slowly dropping that to weekly sessions with the trainer as I get into the habit. My biggest challenge with working out will be doing it while travelling (like my upcoming 2 week trip to NewComm/SXSW).
  • Traineo rocks!

Anyways, overall things are going well. New low in my weight, I can actually see my cheekbones, I’m down 10 pounds from my last trip, starting to get into the habit of making better choices in my eating.

Building the habits is the next big step. If you’re interested in losing weight, there’s an entire community of fatbloggers (centered around Jason). Lots of great info, lessons, etc. One of these days I’ll create a FeedBurner network for them so anyone can read all the great posts :)

Are you using the stock mat, or did you “upgrade” to something better? I originally tried DDR a few years ago and within 48 hours the mat was destroyed and it seemed like the solid models were up to $200 which seemed like too much.

Dave, it’s just hte one that came with the game. MadCatz makes another that’s about 60$ I think. Hoping this one doesn’t break, but the game’s so new there’s no anecdotal evidence to suggest anything either way :(

Three kids and me (Mom) who love DDR have not destroyed our original mat yet. Which game did you get? We like DDR Extreme 2 the most. I like the beginner level and the dance master mode which is great for workouts.

I wrote an app to help track weight loss. Draws graphs of weight, and the trend weight. Very useful. Its called WatchMyWeight from http://www.brightsmile.me.uk/store
    Its free..

Congrats to you on your dieting. It’s definitely tough but I recommend a book called “You On A Diet” by Dr. Oz. It really is great at helping you start eating right and if nothing else, it’s great motivation.

I did not even realize that I was exercising until my mom said something to me one day about losing weight. I realized that Dance revolution was not only fun but I was getting a great workout!
