Technorati: Too Quick, Too Fast

by Jeremy Wright on July 11th, 2005

Funny that I missed this in my last post.

Not only is Technorati lagging behind in blog tracking, which is sad enough, but they’re trying to sell their blog tracking services to corporations!

According to SiliconValley Watcher, they even made arses of themselves at a recent panel by “pitching” during the panel (a huge no-no):

Last Friday I was on a panel with Sam Whitmore, of the popular Media Survey, and Peter Hirshberg, a very high powered marketing guy (see his bio) representing Technorati, a well known web site that is very highly regarded by the blogging community because of its early focus on the blogging phenomena…

…Technorati has done an enormous amount of work in supporting the early blogging communities, and it has been a strong evangelist for bloggers everywhere through its promotion of blogs and bloggers. And through its close watch on blogs, it has helped the blogging community understand itself, and how it is evolving…

…What surprised me was how aggressively Mr Hirshberg was pitching Technorati’s expensive blog tracking services to this audience of agency and corporate communications professionals.

(quote, and the seed planted into my head, thanks to Marketing Shift)

I actually agree with Jason. This isn’t the time, overall, to be selling companies on these services. And, in light of Technorati’s complete inability to keep a pure, accurate and up-to-the hour index of the blogosphere, it is most definitely not the time for Technorati to be doing this.

If they can’t fulfill their promise, they aren’t only going to damage their company, they are going to damage the blogosphere overall. Shame on Technorati for not only going down this route, but also for profiting off of bloggers work and not giving back in any way (how about to the blogger defense fund for a start?).

Grrr… Yeah, I’m in a good mood today ;-)

They’re losing content right and left (which means none of their search results or rankings can be trusted) and their service is intolerably slow. With so many smart eyes on them, this just won’t end well. Are they really that far ahead of IceRocket? You think Google couldn’t catch up with them in just a few weeks work?

Well, my first thought was that PubSub was nipping at their heels, not Icerocket.

But, none of my tags ever get picked up. I just figured it was a conspiracy (they did deny that, though, when I asked if it was).

Well Jeremy, thanks for the hat tip. I thought I was the only one fed up with all of the attention Technorati was getting in spite of it’s slower than molasses results. Tomorrow I’m going to do a little piece on the difference between Technorati and BlogPulse and I promise it’s going to raise a few eyebrows. When I was asked by Intelliseek to give some feedback to the blogpulse team I was pretty excited. Then when I found out what they were planning in the next feature set release I got really excited. Not only did they listen to my feedback but they incorporated it in short order and will be launching a lot of great stuff soon. Compare their speedy results, simple interface and accurate tracking of the blogosphere to Technorati and it makes you say huh?

    More tomorrow :)

    Monitor the Blogosphere
I think this discussion from Doc Searls is worth following simply because of the diverse approaches to monitoring the blogosphere. Technorati and a couple of other organizations, including us to a lesser degree, are working on analytics and algorithm
