Another Blogger Up for Auction

by Jeremy Wright on November 27th, 2004

Darren Barefoot, another prominent blogger is offering himself up for auction as well. Here’s his eBay auction. And here’s his post explaining it.

Darren’s had the advantage of watching me muddle my way through this in my typically obtuse fashion. He’s put together a great package for himself. Mine was more about the idea than myself.

Am I upset? Damn no. First and foremost, Darren asked if he could first. Obviously there would be no law against him just going ahead and doing it, but Darren and I have become, dunno, “blog buddies”. I respect him more than just about anyone else in the blogosphere, and him asking my permission only increased that respect.

My response was simple: I’m doing this to raise the profile of blogging, and as a result anything which helps that - and 2 prominent bloggers certainly qualifies - can only be a good thing.

He’s priced his auction starting at my current price, 500$, which is fair enough. Part of this exercise is to determine the current market value of blogging. A year ago this would have been less than 100$/month. These days it’s at least 250$/month. I know we’re both hopeful that we can get exposure for blogging, as well as ourselves, and that the press this will generate will ultimately benefit everyone.

Darren’s synopsis’ is a good one:

competition, we figure, is a tide that raises all ships

Oh, and what’s the difference between us? Darren is more marketing. I’m more pureplay business and technical. Oh, and he’s got a sexy picture of himself on his auction ;-)

You say you are more “business”, but in the months i have browsed your blog, i am yet to see a business related post (let alone a good one). What are your business qualifications?

You’re right, I don’t post about business as much as I used to. Most of that’s a function of the reality that 50% of my day is spent doing enterprise tech stuff, and the other 50% of my day is spent with my family or blogging.

That’s what you see reflected here. However, my interests, my broader writing, my projects and my passion is still business. Just because I don’t blog it as I go through my day doesn’t mean it’s a reality, and it doesn’t mean the skills and passion aren’t there.

Feel free to email me sometime if you’d like to chat about it :)
