Summer Movie Recall
First, let’s recall what I was hoping for this summer:
The Day After Tomorrow: I thought it’d be worth seeing. Apparently I thought it was. Looking back on it now it was worth the admission price, and the conversation after the movie was great as well. I won’t buy the DVD, but I might just rent it to see some easter eggy bits again.
Mean Girls: Apparently I didn’t write a review about this. Musta been ashamed. To be honest, it was better than I thought it’d be. Just enough twists to make it fun. Just cheesy enough to not throw you off. It was definitely “some good, unrude, mindless fun”.
Shrek 2: “By definition, this movie had better rock my socks off.” It didn’t. It was funny enough. Cute enough. But it was not anywhere near rocking my socks off.
Van Helsing: I was looking forward to a good Vampire movie. And I got it. Not a typical Vamp movie, but one that didn’t take itself seriously. Very well worth it.
Harry Potter: I admitted it was a guilty pleasure and was hoping it’d hold me off until the next book. It did. I really enjoyed how the characters were fleshed out and important bits were completely brought to life. Really enjoyed this movie and honestly can’t wait for the next movie and book.
The Stepford Wives: I figured “hey, if I, Robot sucks, maybe this one won’t”. It did. Way too short. Crappy plot. Bad acting. Ah well, at least movies are cheap here in Winnipeg.
The Bourne Supremacy: I figured it’d be worth the price of admission just to remember the storyline of the first. It was. Good movie. Good chase scenes. Clean, yet gritty.
I, Robot: I thought this’d suck. It didn’t. Apparently I thought it was: 1. Perfectly titled 2. Well executed 3. Totally entertaining 4. Very creative 5. True to “asimov” in the same way that the ghost writer books of late have been (like Caliban was, actually)… Not bad :)
I also saw Manchurian Candidate, Without a Paddle, The Village, Starsky & Hutch and Spidey 2.
While it was certainly a “big” movie season… Looking back I don’t feel that invigorated. There was no Matrix. There was no Lord of the Rings. There was nothing that actually blew my mind with how great it was. I know I can’t expect that every season, it’s just disappointing that the best I could give most of the movies this summer was “worth the ticket price”. I guess that isn’t bad, that I saw so few flops… But it isn’t great either. I want to be more than just entertained “enough”. I want to be truly into a movie, and that hasn’t happened in a while.
