  • Back is *very* tender today, but okay, all things considered. Worst sleep ever, of course, but at least last night is done! #
  • Having our new intrab5 VOIP system put in today. Toronto office testing first, but could be our solution to crap Skype-based team calls. #
  • Phew, what a day!!! Busiest / most overlapping / most exciting I remember in the last few months! #
  • Wow… Just had a Technical PM applicant apply… One of his key skills? Registering domains. Oh, and he’s been using Windows since 3.11 ;-) #
  • Seems everyone feels registering domains is a real skill… Maybe we should open a new position? VP of Domain Registration? #
  • @shaicoggins – lol, folk do realize ed’s a non-sentient being, right? ;-) #
  • Fell asleep at my desk earlier. Clear sign to head home. *sigh* did see bryce on the street, which was great! #

Avoiding the BlackBerry Twitch

Before I got my first blackberry, I hated the idea. Mostly because I hated people with the “blackberry twitch”; ie: that incessant need to check the phone every time it buzzes/dings/etc with a new email message.

When I finally *had* to get my first berry, I determined that I’d do everything in my power to avoid this. I knew I’d still *check* my email frequently, but that’s different than the constant distraction of the Evil Flashing Red Light, the Slightly Sexy Silent Buzzing and Nebulous BlackBerry Twitch.

So here’s what I’ve done to avoid that. It isn’t perfect, but it works for me:

1. Use Gmail, instead of blackberry mail. It’ll stop the buzzing, which is good. It’ll also segregate out your SMS messages from your email, which is hugely useful (SMS still buzzes). 2. Don’t use your blackberry email address for regular mail. Sync everything up through your gmail or main email account. Forget you have a blackberry mail account. 3. EXCEPT, set your mail server (or Gmail) to forward all emails with a subject line of “URGENT” to your blackberry mail account 4. Set your blackberry to go off with a specific ringtone when it receives messages with “urgent” in the subject line 5. If you use Twitter via SMS, use TwitterBerry or a similar client, so messages don’t get lost in your SMS queue.

Basically, use Gmail to keep your data usage down and to stop the buzzing, route urgent emails to your blackberry mail and prioritize it properly, segregate out all non-essential communication (ie: Twitter / Pownce / etc).

This’ll allow you to check mail when YOU want to (which’ll still probably be every 5 minutes, heh), to check your non-essential communiques when YOU want to, get stuff that’s actually urgent right away and not lose your SMS messages (which most blackberry users do).

  • @stuartma – daily delays. Probably due to the current upgrades to put stop and next-train info in. But it’s causing me daily issues. #
  • @kaleemux – until last week, I only had issues about once a month. Now it’s once a day :-( #
  • Wow, just got totally ignored by a cabbie. Knocked on his window and everything… Maybe he’s prejudiced against brown people! ;-) #
  • "Hey, we’re from b5media" … "Did you just make that up?" … Lol, good times ;-) #
  • @davefleet – yonge, from eg to queen. #
  • *sigh* late meeting tonight, early meeting tomorrow… Looking forward to this weekend being over, cause all week is like this… #
  • It’s definitely time for another drinks + decks. Late feb / early march? #
  • Wowwwww… owwwww…. back freaking out today, and I’m in meetings til 9pm… *whimper* #
  • This is a back spasm for the record books… Thinking I’ll need to get some morphine for this… ;-( #

  • Just finishing the saddest book I’ve read in years. :-( #
  • @saleemkhan, @wboswell and others, it’s a harry otter fan fiction trilogy. "Psychic serpent". Awesome, but ending was … Wow. #
  • GRRRR!!! Nexus application was denied. *sigh* Guess I can plan to spend hours chatting up US border guards every trip for the next few years #
  • S’alright @ nexus. It was a nice hope, but the US is allowed to have their standards, and I’m used to falling below the bar ;-) #
  • @briansullivan – just that my curren status continued to require regular review. A few folk have said it takes 5 years for that to clear. #
  • It’s been 3 years since my last incident, so I can live with waiting a few more years for the US to get comfortable that I’m not a threat :) #
  • Started getting back into jazz music again (after a few years of the harder stuff). Not sure if I should be proud or embarrassed… #
  • @ducksnorts – I’ve always loved jazz… but loving it, and having it part of my daily music rotation are different things ;-) #
  • I mean, I LOVE gregorian chants too… but listening to them while I work’d be weird :-D #
  • Not mcd’s … Not mcd’s… Agh, must find new office so this isn’t a daily struggle. On the plus side, I’ve onky succumbed once in a month! #
  • Trip to the valley next week is looking like my busiest yet! #
  • Daily ttc issues are starting to drain my wallet (subway blocked for hour+ daily = taxis). #
