Can You Get AdSense to Beat $1CPM? Try It – $10K Prize

Chad wrote a decent post titled “The 7 Levels of Revenue for Your Blog“.

It’s a decent post. Not perfect, but basically dead on. His main point is that AdSense sucks. It has some good points, like paying out on all international traffic (unlike most ad networks) and being a very easy way for any blogger to make money very early on.

Chad took some flack from folk like Steve Pavlina and Vince Cordic. They both basically said that earning less than $5CPM means you’re doing something wrong.

Steve Pavlina: If your Adsense CPM is below $5, I’d say you probably haven’t optimized it very well. A $1 CPM is extremely weak.

Vince Cordic: If you can’t get a CPM of at least $5-10 with Adsense, your doing something seriously wrong.

Yeah. So, guys, let’s put your money where your mouth is. Actually, let’s put my money where your mouth is.

Get our AdSense eCPM across the network to 5-10eCPM and I’ll send you a cheque for $10,000 (US). Easy as pie, eh? I mean it must be easy if y’all can throw around figures like 10CPM. 10CPM per unit on a network our size would net us something like 400K/month in revenue. Just from AdSense. So I’d love to see it, and am more than willing to be proven wrong on Chad’s point that most folk get about a buck, and that’s with a fair amount of work.

See here’s the thing. I’ve been at this for awhile, and know most of the high-end AdSense guys personally. I have a good relationship with the AdSense team, and b5media makes a decent amount of money from AdSense. But I still hate it.

So let’s see if it’s just my hate that’s getting in the way of common sense, or if it’s something else.

Here are a list of 5 sites doing more than half a million pages a month in traffic (so smaller numbers don’t skew things):

The sites combined are currently averaging about 30c CPM per unit, on about 100K impressions a day (we’ve been phasing AdSense out pretty aggressively of late).

If you’re interested in the 10K prize, simply send me a list of changes. I’ll blog them (so others know ahead of time what’s being done). Take a screenshot before and after, and post the percentage change (I’ll also find someone external to serve as an independent judge to confirm results, so we can’t, y’know, lie).

If you’re able to increase the per-unit eCPM by a given amount, I’ll give you a given prize (each prize can only be claimed once):

  • 1st prize: Average eCPM $5 – 10K
  • 2nd prize: Average eCPM $4 – 3K
  • 3rd prize: Average eCPM $3 – $2000 in ads across the b5media blog network

As always, there are some restrictions (these are off the top of my head and may change as folk try and get sneaky). These restrictions basically boil down to 1 point: our content is king, and we refuse to do anything that’s going to ruin our user experience. You can feel free to do whatever you want on your site, but for us a subscriber or return user who truly values our content is way more important than a $1 click.

A list of these, off the top of my head:

  • Nothing in the posts themselves. Period. It converts stupidly well for AdSense specifically because it tricks users. Tricking users means sending them away. They’ll never come back. That’s bad for business.
  • Nothing black-hat or that’s been specifically frowned on by Google. This would include images beside ads, making ads blend into content more than they’re supposed to, etc.
  • No more than the standard number of units per page. Including hidden units and so forth (you’d think this would fall under the above but as I said, I’ve been at this for awhile and heard the whole “if only you’d do this one thing that isn’t technically cool by Google you could double your earnings”).

That’s the short list.

Is it fair? Maybe not. But the number of times AdSense “guru’s” have told us we could double or triple our revenues only to find that their advice amounts to “start high-paying blogs, dump them full of useless search engine content, create false pages, trick users and mix ads into your content” is appalling.

As I said, if you want to push your readers away, that’s fine. But for me, as a blogger, and for us, as a blog network… Readers are important to us. Every single one. It does me no good at all to engage in tactics which earn us tonnes of money the first month, but slow our growth, demotivate our bloggers and turn us from a very real content company into nothing more than a glorified splog network.

So if you have real suggestions that will actually drive up revenue in a sane, legal and cool way that won’t interfere with our users’ experience, bring it on! I’d be more than happy to be proven wrong. I mean, my money’s on the table. It’s waiting. You have live sites with real data, real traffic and what should be an easy means of increasing revenue. I’m not even requiring 5-10CPM to win this. Increase it to the rate we get on some of our graphical remnant ads (nevermind our premium stuff) and I’ll pay you money.

Hell, if you’re that good I’d probably make you a job offer! :-D

Easy, right? ;-) Sure it is. Come and take my money if earning massive CPMs on AdSense is so easy!

Redeeming Myself from the Blogger Face-Off

Okay, so Nandini kicked my ass in the Bloggers Face-Off last month. Maybe I suck at rapid-fire interviews. Maybe Instablogs is cooler than the b5media blog network. Maybe girls just get more votes.

It’s okay, I’m cool with it. No, really! ;-)

When Daniel first asked me for my responses to the questions, I actually wrote full answers, and we then shortened them for the face-off. Daniel has now posted the complete interview.

Since it’s just me in the interview I shouldn’t have any problems coming in first :-D

Time Management Series: Update

I’ve been travelling a lot lately. As a result, stuff in life has suffered. My weight loss. My family. My drumming.

And, oh yeah, my time management series ;-) I’ve received a half dozen emails asking when it’s coming back. So here’s where things are at:

My goal for this week is to get caught up again and to start getting back into the swing of a balanced life again. If that works, I’ll get back at larger projects like the time management series the week afterwards.

Hope that works for everyone!

Current Weight: 226.4

Thanks Jason for the poke!

I’m back after three weeks on the road and I’m +2 pounds… ugh. I need to get focused and starting hitting the gym hard. [...] How are my other fatbloggers(tm) doing!?!

Yeah, not so hot. Like Jason I’ve basically been on the road for the last month or more. When I’m on the road, everything suffers. Sure, I try and make more good decisions than bad (work out once a week, move my meal decisions one “notch” more towards healthy than I otherwise would and eat protein bars)…

But, everything still suffers. It takes me 2-3 days to get back into the swing of things. Which is an uphill battle since my trips have been only about 2 days apart! As a result I also cancelled my personal training sessions during my travel since it wouldn’t be fair on me, my body or my trainer to be all over the place physically and emotionally.

When I went into The Stretch, I weighed 227.6 and was feeling on top of the world. This week I’ll start to get back into the swing of things. It’ll take me awhile (probably a week to get totally up to speed again). Still, I’m now 226.4! I’ve been largely fluctuating between 227-229 the whole time which, for me, is a very, very good thing. It means that even after I finish this 4-12 month period of pushing myself to get healthier and lose weight that I’ll still be able to maintain that weight!

The reality is that during this period I’ve made a tonne of bad decisions, and nowhere near enough good ones. So I’m looking forward to a fresh start. A line in the sand. All that fuzzy stuff.

Hey Jason, maybe it’s time for another podcast to see how folk are doing? ;-)

Now, time to call my personal trainer so I can start booking in sessions again!

b5hiring: Round 2!

About a month ago I wrote our first ever real hiring post. In it I outlined a bunch of positions we had opening up either right away or “soon”. So far we’ve managed to either fill or redefine all of them! It’s amazing how hard hiring can be, but based on the amazing applicants we had from last round, I wanted to post an update – especially since two of the positions have been entirely redefined. In addition, wanted to highlight a new position our two!

Project Manager (aka: Project Ninja): Last time this was called an Operations Manager. As we looked at the job and talked to many of the (fantastic!) applicants, we quickly realized that this was really more about project management. We actually recently restructured b5 internally (no firing, pure positive restructuring… another post on that later) and this project got slotted in at the same time. Basically there are currently 3 teams at b5 Tech, Content and Sales. Each of these has the authority, responsibility and budget to Get Stuff Done. The Project Manager will be working as part of the Tech team (under Aaron Brazell) both to provide services to Tech’s “clients” and to lend PM-experience to other teams (especially Content) as needed. Ultimately Tech becomes all about implementation, so in addition the PM will be responsible for tracking projects throughout the company and ensuring balls don’t get dropped due to miscommunication or lack of communication. This is a Toronto-based position. We can easily move you from within Canada and (if you have the points) move you from elsewhere in the world.

Product Manager (aka: Product Rockstar): The last time we talked this was the Affiliate Manager position. It has since shifted *a lot*. Most of this was due to our recent on-site where we realized several of the positions we were thinking of having as part time could really be mashed up into one Special Projects kind of position. Then we (together with our rocking VC’s) realized that what this really was, was product management. Taking a concept, working together a spec and product plan, securing budget and then making it happen. This person will be leading the new Product group at b5, and should expect this team to grow quickly as products succeed/fail and as revenue for the unit increases and it becomes profitable. This is a new business unit. While we’re looking for a fantastic product manager with lots of experience, we also would like (not a requirement) someone who understands the blogging space, understands some of the dynamics of advertising and ultimately has shipped products. It’s what you do, it’s how you think, it’s what you love. This is a Toronto-based position. We can easily move you from within Canada and (if you have the points) move you from elsewhere in the world.

Server Administrator (aka: Server Ninja): We’re looking for an experienced server admin. We run LAMP. We run WordPress. We run clustered web servers and database servers. We have caching at the app level, the web server level and at the edge. We do a lot of file replication between web servers and DB servers. We want someone who’s comfortable in a high-performance, high-availability environment, but who understands that things need to “grow”. One day “soon” we’ll likely move from our current dedicated environment to a colo or self-hosted one, so comfort with hardware is pretty key. Experience in network stuff, multi-DC replication and failover, backup systems, etc is all very, very good. Like the PM you’ll be working under Aaron. This position can be virtual, though we like folk being in Toronto (seeing as how we move into our new office June 1!). If you’re virtual, we’d only ask that you speak English really, really well and that you really enjoy working as part of an open and dynamic tech team. This is also partially a support position, so great people skills are an absolute must.

Finally, we are always looking for folk in online ad sales at the extremely junior (ie: just started, really want to pound the pavement) and slightly more experienced (ie: 1-4 years, love what you do, want to sell in a new and challenging and fun environment). These folk can be anywhere in North America and even in Europe for one project.

So that’s it! Not quite as many positions as last time, but these ones will basically fill out the company so we can push this to a whole new level!
