Travels: NewComm & SXSW

Just a note that as of tomorrow I’m travelling for almost 2 weeks. I’ll be at the New Communications Forum from the 6-9th and at SXSW from the 9-13th. If anyone wants to hook up at either event, feel free to email or (even better) call my cell (number on the About page).

BlogNetworkCamp Update

Last week we floated the idea of having a BlogNetworkCamp at SXSW. We figured we’d be doing really well if a dozen people showed up. Not a big event, by any stretch, but hopefully a decent sharing of ideas. One of the key things we hadn’t done, though, was firm up a date, time and location (since we were only floating the idea, we floated a time).

The original time conflicted with the Web Awards, as well as bowling, so we moved it back a few hours. So far, the only folk who can’t make it to the new time are the 9rules guys, which is a shame. We didn’t feel we could move it to another day, though, as Sunday was the only day 2 other networks could make it. Hopefully the 9rules guys aren’t too busy to at least pop their heads in, but no worries if they are. SXSW is a major conference for their community, after all :)

So, per the Upcoming.org listing, we have a date/time/location settled (let us know if there’s a major issue with this though!):

5pm, Sunday the 11th, at Opal Divine’s Freehouse. We’ve made reservations for a dozen, and we’ll be providing food and drinks.

I’m still hopeful folks who’ve said they can’t make it will somehow be able to swing it (9rules, Syntagma, Instablogs), as it’s central to some of the discussions going on right now (like here, in the comments). It won’t be the same without them. Hell, maybe the Shiny Media and BlogNation guys’ll even show up and make it a real ho down (sp?) :-D

Fatblogging: 228.5lbs – DDR – Joined Gym

Phew! It’s been a week since I started seriously looking at losing weight. In brief, here’s where I’m at:

  • When I started this I was sick. So, while I got down to a low of 230, it was my “sick low”. When I got better, I ended up adding a few pounds. It was hard, but it’s great now that I’m back down.
  • I’ve been doing short daily walks (10-15 minutes) just to get into the habit of it.
  • I’ve been generally keeping my calories down to about 1800 (sometimes lower, sometimes – like Tuesday where I went to McDonald’s – higher). This is from my previous average of 2500-2800. Considering a pound of fat is 3500 calories, this is a great start as long as I can keep it up (food is hardest for me).
  • Dance Dance Revolution (see here for info on how folk use DDR to lose weight) for the Xbox 360 was finally released yesterday. Picked it up and played (sadly… wanted to go to a friend’s wedding, but couldn’t find a babysitter anywhere… moving to a new city sucks, especially when you find an agency called “In A Pinch” and they need 24 hours notice). First hour on DDR was fantastic. It’s a lot of fun, challenging, and is obviously a great workout. Plus, it tracks calories burned, which rocks ;-)
  • Went to the gym for the first time today. I’ll be going Monday/Wednesday/Friday at 8:30am. Anyone who knows me knows the idea of getting up at 7:30 is … challenging ;-) I’ll be doing each workout with a trainer for the first 1-2 months, then slowly dropping that to weekly sessions with the trainer as I get into the habit. My biggest challenge with working out will be doing it while travelling (like my upcoming 2 week trip to NewComm/SXSW).
  • Traineo rocks!

Anyways, overall things are going well. New low in my weight, I can actually see my cheekbones, I’m down 10 pounds from my last trip, starting to get into the habit of making better choices in my eating.

Building the habits is the next big step. If you’re interested in losing weight, there’s an entire community of fatbloggers (centered around Jason). Lots of great info, lessons, etc. One of these days I’ll create a FeedBurner network for them so anyone can read all the great posts :)
