Update: Ooooh, looks like this was well and truly a scoop. Thanks to Valleywag for confirming it, and for the credit! For the record, I think it’s a great name. It keeps GigaOm’s strong brand, while abstracting it out to a parent company that Om and crew can have some real fun with. A little tip for Om: Next time you’re trying to keep a company name a secret, don’t name service subdomains (like newsletters) after it ;-)

*sniff* *sniff*

Anyone else wondering how Om Malik would be transforming GigaOm into a media empire after he received his funding? I mean, nobody’s going to walk around saying “I work for GigaOm”. And there’s no way he’s silly enough to name the company totally after himself. I mean he’s no Oprah (who doesn’t even spell her name properly for her company), Trump or Martha Stewart.

Still, GigaOm itself is a valuable brand.

So, what’s a not-so-young entrepreneur to do?

Well, apparently, slightly rename the parent company which will come to own GigaOm. The parent company’s name? Giga Omni Media. Of course I could have the capitalization / spacing wrong, but a little birdie (ie: bad HTML coding) pointed me at the domain for the company:

Yep, 13 days after he landed funding.

To be honest, at first I thought maybe I’d missed the ball. Like this had been mentioned before. I mean, I’m not exactly a “scoopy” kind of a blogger. But when the term (and several variations of it) “giga omni media” showed nada on Google I figured I had to be onto something.

I’ll hit save on this for now, until I figure out more / have more time.
