New Laptop?
I think I’ll be in the market for a new laptop in the next few weeks. Trying to figure out what to pickup. My Acer’s lasted me well over the last 18 months, but it’s really become a “family computer” that I take away when I travel. So I’m looking for something new.
Something beefy enough that I can actually *work* on it, something light enough that I can sleep without agonizing back pain after a day of carrying it around, and something that looks cool.
Yes, I said it, specs, weight and “coolness” are my top 3 factors.
I’m seriously looking at the Vaio FE690.
I’ve had a couple of Vaio’s and really liked them. My favorite laptops, out of all the ones I’ve owned, are the Vaio’s and Toshiba Satellites. Built the way I’d want it, it’d probably run me about 2K.
Any thoughts or other recommendations?

I *so* was going to put “and don’t suggest buying a Mac” right in there at the end, but didn’t want to deprive someone of that little coup de grace ;-)

A Thinkpad if you must, otherwise come on now, do I really need to say it?

Jeremy, the Mac thing is good indeed. ;-) But if you are looking for something to travel with, have you considered going ultra mobile? I LOVE the Sony sub-compact laptops, but I am digging the UX180p even more. It’s got 1024×768 resolution which should be enough for most things on the raod, and if you hook it up to the dock and an external display, you get more than adequate resolution. Keep the dock at home hooked up to a monitor, keyboard and mouse and maybe even add an external firewire or USB hard drive for storage of your big stuff that you don’t need to have with you when traveling (as well as backups) I posted a write-up on this just the other day…check it out!

Frank, I don’t think I’m ready for a UMPC. I’ll go look at the sub-compacts now though, just in case one tickles my fancy :)

Well, I’m in the hunt for a new laptop too and I really had my eyes on the new MacBook, after all it’s one of the best looking notebooks around and with the new Core Duo and all it’s really up to par, especially at that price. But then I came across a thread on the apple support forums that made me think: it’s better to wait a little and see where this is going – after all I want a white one and not a black one…( http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=516645&tstart=0 )

Not to bang a broken drum but the new MacBooks running Windows XP (or even Vista beta 2) are sweet bits of kit. No need to sacrifice your windows apps and you’ll look like one of (or every other) cool kids on the block!

of course there’s the mac suggestion, but i wouldn’t go with a mac laptop for a while until they get all the bugs out of them (macbook discolouration, heat problems…).
If I was going to get a non-mac laptop, I’d have to go with the thinkpad.
Or just get a refurbished powerbook for cheap :)

I really like my HP with the AMD Athlon 64 bit processor … of course I’m jealous now of all the dual core machines out there.

I say ThinkPad or MacBook Pro.

I have FS series of Vaio. Keyboard is heavenly. So is the Black LED screen.

I highly recommend either a MacBook or MBP. I recently switched from a Dell notebook to the new MacBook and I don’t think I could ever go back. Right now I’m typing on a white MacBook, and I love it.
Anyway, good luck in your search. :)

I’d go with anything that says Dell on the front and Linux on the screen :)

Jeremy, if you don’t want a Mac, then get one. Huh? you say. Yep – but ONLY ever use Windows on it. Imagine your delight at taunting the Mac Zealots with “Oh yeah, I’ve got a Mac. Very happy with it. Runs Windows great. Never used OS X though. Who needs to?”
You could probably take out two or three Zealots at a time with that line. :D

Aren’t you a Tablet PC fan? I just got a new one (Toshiba) and I love it.
