Going to … Romania?
This seems so odd to say. I’m going to Romania in early July, or so it looks. I’ve been asked to go for 3 days or so to help plan a conference in October, to do some training, and to empower the local community in Bucharest (and Romania in general).
The subject? Blogging as a democratic communications medium.
Crazy. Crazy exciting, but crazy.
Their perspective is that under communism, every bit of communication was censored, managed and ultimately state-controlled. And while they aren’t under communism anymore, their “spirits” (ie: emotions and state of mind) are still very much in that place.
Blogging affords them the ability to talk about whatever they want in an open forum, one that isn’t controlled, and one where any other Romanian can take part.
I’m incredibly excited about this. Still a little like “wow, is this really happening”, but incredibly excited. I’ll need to renew my passport and get a Romanian visa, but I’m hoping that won’t be an issue. Fingers crossed!

Oh, that is VERY exciting! Good luck, and let us know how it goes of course!
Pfff, at the moment I’m concentrating on ‘teaching’ family and friends in Perth about blogging, that’s hard enough!!!! ;)

Renew your knowledge. Under communism every bit of communication is censored and has to pass a filter. But yet again, you never experienced communism or read about it. It sucks to be censored. Just don’t do that kind of mistakes again.
And you don’t need a visa. A self-respecting blogger wouldn’t have made that kind of an afirmation without proper consultation and research. It’s what pro journalist and pro blogers do.
And yes, do speak english to the teenagers. They’ll be answering you back in English, not as french do, swearing you if you do not speak their language. Germans also. Hade stupid nations and stupid ideeas. But, yet again.
You may be surprised to find an open-mind Romania even if we’re not that known on the European map, even if we have the greatest people the world has ever seen. [world champions, geniuses, the best "tzuica" [something like a vodka] on Earth].
