This was really an excellent post. Thank you for taking the time to put it together.

One point I disagree on is OWA.

I hate it and have found gmail (combined with the new calendar) to be a huge improvement.

Dan: I think all the Google-watchers out there are paying attention, and see Google's toys, but aren't overly impressed by them. Apple releases cool toys that people use... an iPod is definitely a useful toy. Google Maps is very useful. Beyond that, I have trouble taking the time to even play with these. As Jeremy said, Google Spreasheets is lacking too much functionality to make it a viable alternative to Excel.

(Although I'm sure some people are willing to make the sacrifice to make a point against Microsoft, for whatever reason.)

Dan: Ah, yes, the mystical value of an eyeball. Sorry, but if Google can't monetize eyeballs (and they've been trying), who can?

Lord: Out of all of that, you focus on Orkut? ...

On the "big picture", Google hasn't yet made money with the other products. Sure they can get people using them, but not clicking ads. As I said, everything you need is in their S1 filing.

As far as "closed", sorry, but MS isn't actually closed. Thousands of blogs, dozens of videos everyday, open tours of the campus, lots of open conferences and conventions, bringing in outside speakers every week, MSDN, just about every API documented, quick responses to issues, an actual phone number you *can* call when you have issues, public listing of email addresses...

Hell, at Google you often can't even get an employee to give you their *TITLE* for goodness sakes.

No, Google epitomizes "closed". MS is learning to be "open", but Google is taking Apple's example on "closed" to the extreme.

Sorry to break your illusion bro but orkut makes no money on orkut cos there isn't one single ad in there. :p BTW can you point to your source when you specifically break down that none of their applications are making any money?

Secondly you forgot that M$ boasts that they can make in search cos the have the monopoly on OS market. Now if Google has good following of other products, then people also use their other stuff. Guess what? The other stuff that people can be seduced into makes a lot of moolah!

So, can we for once, focus on the bigger picture? :p

Also, by your very own reasoning -- 9. Google is a “closed” company. Users don’t trust “closed”. -- I should not be trusting M$ even by far stretch cos they are even more closed than M$. Prove me wrong. ;)

Well, the think you've forgotten is mind share. As long as google is the predominant search engine and adwords in the predominant online advertising, google has lots of $$$ coming in. As long as Google, kind of like Apple, can release new toys which keep geeks interested and keep non-geeks looking over the geeks shoulder, they are keeping up there mind share.

The web surfing populace is a feeble bunch. How many search engines, social netowrking sites, and such have lossed there way. How things have been passe. Google's got the cash to play, and as long they keep turning tricks,we'll keep interested. Will they beat Microsoft, maybe not. But by keeping M$N on the keep up, realistically or perceptually, they will keep their bubble from bursting.
