Happy Birthday Me

Category: GeneralJeremy Wright @ 12:30 pm

I’m currently in the air to Romania (posted this yesterday). It’s odd to wish myself a happy birthday I guess, but who cares. It’s been a great year, with an even better one ahead. I’ve had an incredible blast, so this birthday to me is really a thank you to all the great people in my life.

From the folk in St. Stephen like Dan, Anita, Peter, Mary-Ellen, Walter, Carol, Jeff, Matt and all the musicians.

To friends at b5 like Darren, Duncan, Shai, CJ, Aaron, Ingrid, Jonic, Tim, Hsien, Cory and all the awesome bloggers, partners and behind-the-curtain folk.

To people in blogging like Marc, Todd, Jeff, Sam, Tony, Andrea and all of the folk who inspire me every day.

All the way around to just general awesome people in my life like Shannon, Evan, Alex, Papa, Mom, Jake, Will (deceased), Ben, Ben, Pudd, Thomas and everyone else who makes me smile everyday.

While it’s my birthday, my life is worth living largely thanks to all of you. So thank you!

Romania Tomorrow

Category: From My LifeJeremy Wright @ 7:14 pm

I’m so looking forward to this trip. I have 3 of 4 sessions ready, passport all done and I’m just about ready to think about prepping to start packing, heh.

It’s a long trip (almost 18 hours), but I’m very much looking forward to meeting everyone and chatting with Romania bloggers, business people and marketers about what blogging means for them (ie: I’m not going there with all the answers, mainly to fuel discussion).

Back on the 6th, in case I don’t blog while in Romania!

Google Checkout Quits

Category: IT ThoughtsJeremy Wright @ 2:32 pm

I decided to give Google Checkout a shot. Signed up, got all set (pretty quickly, well done Google). Headed over to Buy.com. Saw this laptop and thought that if it worked it’d be a nice buy.

Added it to my cart. Clicked “Proceed to Checkout”. Clicked to go to Google Checkout. And…

Yuh-huh. Nice. And, no, this isn’t in Beta so no excuses this time.

Google Check-Out

Category: Business, General, IT ThoughtsJeremy Wright @ 10:47 am

I really tried to come up with a snappy title for this. Like “Google Checks Out” or “Checking Out Google” or even “When Did Google Check Out?”.

Nothing stuck. So I’m stealing Mark Evans’ title.

Another week, another weak Google launch. Another round of “this is an [x] killer!“.

Mark’s got a good point:

Not to dismiss Google Checkout’s features, which seem interesting, but when was the last time Google launched a new service that kicked some serious butt?

And he’s right. And I’ll tell you when the last time Google launched a service that actually “killed” anything.

Ready?

AdSense. And before that? Search.

And that, my friends, is it. Those are Google’s only home runs. While Gmail is great, and forced a minor revolution (UI and disk space), the truth is it didn’t “kill” anything. Hotmail and Yahoo! Mail have both seen their numbers go up, not down. Ditto maps. Great UI, awesome API. But I haven’t seen Mapquest, MapPoint or Yahoo Maps fold. Their usage has gone up. Hell, they even all have features that are better than Google Maps now.

I always hate it when people refer to Google apps as “killers”.

The truth is that while Google has some really great ideas, and incremental innovations, and has really knocked it out of the park with 2 of those innovations… They aren’t the kind of company that has yet managed to “kill” anyone. Even in their 2 standout products. And never a major player like PayPal or Ebay or Microsoft or Yahoo.

Google’s a leech. An innovative leech, but a leech nonetheless. They can’t lead. They can’t develop software that gets mass appeal. And they can’t even innovate beyond their first core of ideas that are more than a decade old.

The fact that nobody’s trounced them is really only a reflection on how easily intimidated the competition has become, not on how great a company Google is.

I mean, to put this in perspective, Google now has 500 times as many PhD’s as they had when they hit their last home run. On a cost-per-kill scale, they’re doing piss-poor. No offence to Google, of course ;-)

Biggest Lies About Blogging

Category: Blogging, Business, From My LifeJeremy Wright @ 2:31 pm

I’m doing some work with MarketingProfs over the next few months, which is probably why they asked to contribute my “biggest lies” about blogging to this piece.

Some folk’ll recognize some of them, as ideas that were stirring in mailing lists I was part of that week. All credit would go to the smart individuals on the mailing lists, if I could find the posts!

It was really nice of Seth and others to link me up for having “the best ones”.

Out of all the ones submitted, I really loved Steve Hall’s “I never thought a blog could become a business, yet, Adrants did. So, anyone who tells you a blog can’t be a money-making entity is lying.” No bloody kidding! ;-)

Busy. The Understatement.

Category: From My LifeJeremy Wright @ 6:42 pm

Just a note that over the next 3-4 weeks I am going to be crazy busy. I mean, I’m always busy, but these next few weeks will take it to a new level. The “busy” period could extend for 6 weeks.

I’ll still try and blog, but if I seem unusually rushed, distant, unresponsive, unable to get to everything I’d normally want to get to, etc… It’s because I am.

Romania from the 30-6th. Then back and straight into a big project for 2 weeks. Then probably into another. Then probably a round-the-world whirlwind trip (itinerary isn’t set at this point, more on that later).

So yeah, crazy busy.

Currently Reading: 75 Feeds (Or: Blogging Addiction Conquered!)

Category: From My LifeJeremy Wright @ 8:38 pm

18 months ago today, I decided to take control of my “blogging addiction”. Partly I was spending way too much time reading feeds. Partly I was spending too much time focussing on talking about stuff instead of doing it. And partly I was just getting sick of the, erm, mutual massaging that blogging can sometimes become.

It’s been a bit of a journey, but one of the key things I’ve been able to measure is my feed subscriptions. When I started this prcess, I read 800 feeds. Craziness. When I realized this had become an issue, I went through and culled feeds I just skimmed over, feeds that were inactive, feeds I hated seeing everyday, etc.

I still had 500 or so.

Every 3-4 months since then, I’ve done the same exercise. And while I keep adding 3-5 feeds a week to my reading, the number just keeps going down. 400. 300. 200. 150.

Today, it went under 100. In fact, I now only read 75 feeds. This time, I cut down primarily in 3 areas: b5 blogs (I was subscribed to about 20, even ones I didn’t like… but the network is so big now that it’s hard to keep track of everything, so now I’m subscribed to the ones I like), business / VC blogs (when we were going after funding this was critical, now it isn’t so important) and plain old dead blogs or blogs I didn’t like.

So yeah, down to 75. It’s nice.

Obviously my blogging levels have dropped in recent months. And while it’s painful to see, I also think it’s healthy. As I transition into being more of “b5media’s CEO” I’m sure I’ll start blogging about the industry more, but for now, when I’m juggling a few things and just trying to keep up with all the balls in the air, focussing on “doing” instead of “talking” is critically important.

Finally, I really did get sick of the circle-jerk that blogging can sometimes be. While I love talking with the industry and “web 2.0″ as much as the next guy, I honestly feel that face-time is way, way better for that, and that constantly blogging about it means that most folk miss the message because of the medium.

Plus, nothing gets decided from a blog post. Everything is done via direct contact anyways.

I’m sure I haven’t really struck a true healthy balance yet. But I’m glad to see that I’m no longer addicted to blogging (medium, message and platform) :)

A Note to My Boys On (Off) Father’s Day

Category: GeneralJeremy Wright @ 9:45 am

I’d intended to write this yesterday, father’s day, but life got in the way. In the hopes that all of history won’t see the irony, I’m writing it now.

My boys. Evan Christopher Wright. Alexander Eden Wright.

You both make me smile more, laugh more, think more and ultimately feel more alive than anyone I’ve ever known, besides your mamma. You are unique, and yet I see myself reflected in you in so many ways. Evan, when you’re tired and you do something repetitive for half an hour, totally lost in it, I see myself. Alex, when your eyes light up and your smile fills the room when I enter it, I see myself.

I am so honoured, proud and made bigger by being your daddy.

Evan, you are growing up so fast, and it is so wonderful! Yes, you’re still daddy’s little boy, but seeing you playing soccer, doing crafts, negotiating for what you want and making up games is so much fun to watch! The other day was your second soccer game and you scored, passed and barely picked up the ball with your hands at all! I felt like yelling ‘THAT’S MY BOY’ the entire game! It’s hard to believe you are almost 3 (just 1 month to go!)! You are so full of life, so creative and so destined for greatness. And while I love all of that, I love you most of all for just being you. Totally unique, totally creative and totally your own person. I’m so proud of you! You’re my favorite Evan ever :-D

Alex, you are such a bundle of life and joy! It’s impossible to describe you to people who haven’t met you yet, because no description does justice to that sense of mischief, fun and laughter that you always carry with you. I love teaching you words (”San DALS!”). I love it when you say no to every single question, even when you mean yes. “Alex, do you want to go for a walk?” “NO!” Then hearing you run to the door yelling “Walk Walk Walk Walk!!!” is such a joy! I can’t imagine life without your smile, your agreeableness and your… waddle ;-) You are the best son any dad can ask for, and I am so glad to have you for my own. I love you boy!
