A Personal Blog
My Favorite Day of the Month
Today was my favorite day of the month. Blogger pay day at b5media! What an incredible amount of fun! It took about 2 hours to get all the emails and reports sent out, and then to send out the PayPal payments. I still need to send cheques, wire transfers and Xoom payments, but PayPal is so fun.
Sure, it’s alarming to see the balance go from 8K to 300$ in just 20 minutes, but it’s such a rush to know that we’re helping so many bloggers find their dreams. We had another blogger quit their full time job this month. So. Much. Fun. I can’t believe I’ll actually one day get paid for doing this ;-)
It’ll be even more fun next month, since we signed on a bunch of new advertisers in March/April, and those payments will start hitting bloggers next month.
I love this job!

Hey Jeremy. A little off-topic, but .. Do you guys get any benefits from multiple and repeating Paypal payouts? Say .. because of dealing with many verified users? I was just curious if it’s possible to reduce paypal’s hidden conversion fee for transfers. I know they are taking an extra 2.90% off of the US Exchange rate conversion into Canadian Dollars what any normal bank would convert it. (today – they payout 111.69% when going rate is 114.59%) .. I wonder if any Canadian Bloggers are finding it better to just open a USA account somewhere and finding it preferable to receiving mailed cheques rather than instant payouts on Paypal? Kind of like .. H&R Block and other discounters .. if you’re getting an income tax refund anyway .. why discount it?
Just a thought …

We’re about to sign up for MassPay with PayPal, which’ll let us pay a monthly fee, and for there to be no transaction fee. Beyond that, I think most bloggers don’t mind the 2% because they’re getting it instantly, vs cheques which can take 2-3 weeks to actually arrive sometimes.

@Hart:
After many months of getting cash from b5 via Paypal up here in Canada, I’ve found that while they do take their cut, there is a way around it.
I applied for, and received, a Paypal debit card. I now withdraw my b5 pay directly from any bank machine out here in Calgary. The magic is that the whole thing ONLY runs on American funds. So, as is the case with b5, if you’re getting paid in American funds to begin with, I just use my debit card to withdraw the money into goold old Canadian greenbacks (and pinkbacks). The conversion is done by the banking system up here and not via Paypal. I therefore avoid any Paypal conversion fees.
The downside is that if I am paid any money from elsewhere in Canadian funds via Paypal, I can’t get at that with my bank card. I either have to convert that to US funds so I can withdraw it (and face the applicable charges) or transfer it to my Canadian bank account which takes a few days.
I’ve found that 90% or better of the money I get paid via various sources into Paypal are American funds though, so it’s not a big deal.
