Fiber to the Home by 2006?

Category: GeneralJeremy Wright @ 5:54 pm

Yowza. Just saw this piece on Memeorandum. Apparently in 1996, the Baby Bells were given more than 200$ billion in tax cuts, in order to deliver fiber option service directly to the home (at the time, they projected this would allow 45Mbps speeds, though the truth is that the same technology in the hands of today’s capable engineers would have allowed for more than 250Mbps) by 2006.

I’m not an American, so I’m not incredibly pissed about this, but it is … well it’s a little … Okay, fine, I’m pissed. Happy?!

    I’m innocent!

ps: I mis-spelled “fiber” in the original post as “Fibert”, for those who are wondering what Chrispian is on about :p

The first thing I do after I get my fiber line is hook up my crystal clear video phone and moon Canada ;)

lol. It could have been just between us.

I’ve got a fiber connection to my house–so the tax cuts must have worked for me. Starting March 1st the phone company that put the fiber down will begin offering TV service. All digital, lots of HD, etc. The internet service is blazing fast, I download at more than a megabyte per second.

Hey, fiber (or Fibert, depending on which way you swing), and those dirt cheap houses in Atlantic Canada could be a killer combination.
