New Yahoo Mail, New Google Blog Search
Just a quick note that Yahoo Mail! is beta testing a completely new mail system, to replace the cludgy old Yahoo Mail, according to Charlene. Many people will say that Yahoo is copying GMail, but the reality is that GMail copied a company Yahoo eventually bought: Oddpost. Oddpost really pioneered rich apps delivered over the web. GMail certainly made improvements to that, but Yahoo Mail’s new client seems to be taking it to the next level with their new release.
Several people (like here and here) are talking about Google’s new blog search engine. The long and short of this is the following: from a technology and usage perspective, it’s FAST… But there’s little depth to the index. That will change over time, but that’s a harsh reality. On the industry side, this will likely increase innovation, speed, consolidation, etc, in blog search which has been long overdue.
Both huge pieces of news in their industry, that I’d love to write long posts about, but I’m simply too tied up this week.

I use oddpost as my daily email account and will be in the Yahoo! Mail beta shortly. All I can say is that GMail has nothing in common with Oddpost. Oddpost functions as an online Outlook replacement. That’s not what GMail does. I have no idea what Yahoo’s new mail will be like, but Oddpost and GMail are not comparable at all.

Hmm, I worry that Google creating a blog search will do to blog results what adding ‘Best Animated Feature’ did to the Academy Awards, by which I mean relegate blogs to the blog search results and exclude them from standard searches.

I’m wondering if Yahoo’s going to announce a time frame that will have the beta open to people who are not participating in it.
