I would think that they ONLY hire the square pegs at Apple, those that are thinking outside the box (because they don't use any canned ideas). I guess if someone's going to get hired, it's got to be someone who applied and you may as well apply. As for Apple hiring, you might as well shoot for the moon if you're going to spend the time to get your resume ready.
