Picking Out my Drums
Now that I’ve started playing, it’s become time to pick out a new kit. Over a year ago I’d wanted to get some RMV drums. Now my tastes have changed though.
I’ve picked out a kit from Gretsch, who make great drums.
Here’s the pic:
They’re Gretsch Catalina Birch drums, all birch. I’ll get it in Fusion configuration (10, 12, 14 toms) and rack mount all of it.
Just thought it’d be cool to show this. I probably won’t get the kit of a few months now, but this fade and this series (in fusion setup) is what I’m looking at grabbing.

Nice. Funny, in my 16 years of playing drums professionally, I’ve only owned two kits, both cheap Pearl Export and CB Percussion setups. I used a band-mate’s Ludwigs for awhile, but preferred my cheapies. My snare drum and cymbals are the only things I spent a lot of money on.
In part, I think it’s because with cheaper drums I don’t worry much about them. I replace hardware and stuff as it breaks over time, so the kits become more Frankenstein by the year. Maybe one day I’ll spring for something higher end, as you have. Ayotte and Taye (where Ayotte’s founder now works), both HQed here in Vancouver, are on top of my list.
If you don’t have new cymbals yet, get Sabians. Not only are they good, they’re Canadian, made in New Brunswick.

Believe me, if I could afford Ayotte’s I would. I’ve never played a Taye kit I liked, but that’s likely because most Taye kits in shops are beginner models (really made by Premier in the UK).
I’m still undecided on cymbals. I’ll likely see how I feel when I get the drums. I’ve got a few sets of fantastic hats (all Sabians, mostly HHX, one custom made). I’m a big fan of Sabians, but it’s hard to argue the allure of Instanbuls or something similar.
I’m really, really happy that I found this kit, especially in fusion sizes. I probably won’t have them in my hands until close to Christmas, but that’s okay with me :)
