Laptop Still Dead…
Had a local action hero / computer rockstar take a look at my computer today. As I mentioned earlier, it was posting but not booting (saying there was no OS). Well we got into the BIOS, and the BIOS isn’t recognizing the hard drive or CD ROM. Not a good sign…

Not to make a blatantly obvious comment, but it sure sounds like perhaps your cables aren’t secure to the mobo.

On a laptop? They’re almost hard-wired…
I’d agree if it was just the HDD (since it’s been removed a few times in the last 2 weeks), but since it’s the CD drive as well (which doesn’t move), it sounds like a weird possibility, no?

Too bad the CD-ROM wasn’t working. Then you *may* be able to start up a Knoppix disk and see if you can get anything off the hard drive (at which point a C9′er like Beer28 would launch into a diatribe about the virtues of Linux/Knoppix/*ix as a recovery tool). I’ve never had that misfortune, however, and hope I never arrive at the day when “everything goes”, although sometimes things have gotten that close which is why I burn quite a bit of my writing work to disc periodically.

Get an external USB CD ROM drive (from a friend or something) and try that out maybe?
