A Personal Blog
In New Brunswick Safe & Sound
Well, we have now arrived in New Brunswick safe and sound. The decision to move was fairly sudden (72 hours ago I didn’t know we were moving). The decision rested partly on the state of the laptop, and partly on our ability to find some place to live. We found a place to live, and BestBuy couldn’t do anything so we took off.
It’s now Monday afternoon.
The drive took about 16 hours. It rained the entire time, which didn’t exactly help us be perky, but it was still a fun drive. It just meant Evan couldn’t run around anywhere near as much as he wanted to. Sadly, we couldn’t stop in Montreal. And I never realized the backroads of Quebec / Maine were quite so… backroady…
There were potholes the size of J-Lo’s booty all over the road :(
We drove through Maine (see our route here). We had NO problems at the border. It saved us between 5 and 8 hours of driving, so the risk of being turned back was worth it.
Thankfully, no problems whatsoever. It was great. The guy gave me a ribbing for being a Windows guy even, which was fun.
We got lost in Maine (Mappoint’s directions through Maine sucked, and the map we bought was 10 years old and VERY out of date). But, we found our way to our destination eventually.
It was a good trip. At 15 hours it was basically a whole day and we were all tired (after getting up at 4am), but we’re all doing well.
So far, no phone yet. Our cellphone doesn’t work out here, hence no calls to family yet. I’m going to go wander around town looking for payphones tonight or tomorrow morning to let family know we’re okay.
More on this later, I’m sure. It’s an adventure (and a half) and I’m sure I’ll have lots and lots of thoughts. The plan is to be here for about 6 weeks and then to figure out if we want to move, or if we want to snatch up some of the job opportunities I’m being given back in Ontario. It’s too bad your dream job doesn’t let you live somewhere like here! ;-)

No kidding.
Sometime when you have the time (two days or more?) and want a real fun thing to do, go see Hopewell Rocks. You’ll have to check the tides in the Bay of Fundy, but it’s worth the trek.
The other two things I loved, were finding a crab shack–and I do mean shack–on the way to Independence Bridge over to PEI.
Take Canada 1 to exit to Moncton. Then take 134 or 15 East, just before you have to make a right turn to go to the bridge.
It looks like it’s a dead end, but there’s a dirt road straight ahead (we were starving and would have gone anywhere) with a faded billboard advertising this Crab thing. So we took the obviously less traveled road until it ended, literally at a sand dune beyond which was the Northumberland Strait.
There was indeed a shack, and I swear, if you had an hour to swim, they’d catch you a lobster and have it ready for you when you got back, and for about $8 Canadian. I had fish and chips, because we didn’t have an hour, and they were terrific. Huge portions, very little money.
Then we went across the bridge to P.E.I. where we stayed in the George Inns (pricey but worth it) in Charlottetown, and wandered. Definitely walk there.
Then we stayed two nights at Dalvay-by-the Sea on the other side of the island. (Take mosquito repellant and have their mussels.) Great place for kids and grown ups. They have a “toy closet” for their guests.
Then wander to the “Cheese Lady” and the “Smoked Salmon” man…. If maps haven’t improved LOL just wander. The man at the Salmon place will be thrilled at your navigational skills and will point you to the perserves man. LOL.
It’s wonderful.
Have fun, Jeremy.

Your family doesn’t read your blog?! ;)
15 hours is pretty long. I’ve driven from here (Ottawa) to Nova Scotia, and I’ve never had the courage to go the entire stretch. I always stay a hotel in Fredericton, New Brunswick (or Edmonston, actually usually Edmonston).
