Online Email Storage Lockin?
Is anyone else seeing 2GB for free Yahoo Mail accounts? At some point, isn’t the amount of online storage going to the reach the point where it’s impossible to switch services, impossible to move your data off the free account, etc? Is 2GB getting close to that limit? I think so. I’ve had to transfer 2GB worth of data over the Net before. It’s not pretty.

Mine is still 250MB… perhaps, it’s US only again, like with Hotmail

I’m in Canada, but I am using a Yahoo.com account. Not that I care about storage, since I use my own mailserver (Yahoo is only used so I can check POP mail while I’m on the go).
Just thought it was interesting that I hadn’t yet seen anyone else reporting this.

I don’t care either… I’m happy with my Gmail :)
But like I discovered with Hotmail, some services are not always provided globally.

For my liking its they way you use it. I’m change between computers fairly regularly depending on what or where I am so I like having Gmail but at the end of the evening back on my desktop I download all my gmail into Thunderbird and sort it. I know it sounds daft but this way I’ve got my own personal archive at home, yet because I’ve set gmail to to archive all email (even the stuff I download a copy of) I can also access all my old stuff externally to.
While I’m at it I still don’t like the way Gmail does archiving, I’d love to see drag and drop folders, which is what I do with Thunderbird, only then might I even consider using gmail online only.

why not keep several accounts then? i’ve switched back and forth between several accounts with lots and lots of stuff on them and rather than switch entirely i just keep them all. it’s perhaps less comfortable than having everything in one place but it’s certainly better than switching services with 2 gigs of stuff.
then again, if you can accumulate 2 gigs of email then you’re a hero in my books.

I don’t use my Yahoo account, but it’s not up to 2gb yet.

My Yahoo is 250 Mb. It is a nice tactic to lock in people. But is people using these free email accounts for serious stuff? I mostly use it around the Internet, and I will not feel bad throwing it away.

It only encourages lazyness – especially in people like myself ;)
