Need Quick Design Help

Category: GeneralJeremy Wright @ 10:12 am

I need someone to knock together a stupidly simple Wordpress template. It’s based off an MT template, so should be simple as pie.

Anyone have the time this weekend to help out? You’ll get full design credit, on a site that I’m expecting will get about 500,000 visits in the 2 months it’ll be live.

My Rocks for 2005

Category: From My LifeJeremy Wright @ 4:07 pm

No, I’m not selling my, ahem, rocks.

But, Dana asks a great question: what are your big rocks (ie: goals) for 2005?

Not in a resolution sense. I hate resolutions. Almost as much as bios.

Here’s Dana’s:

1. Sustaining applied talent
2. Cross discipline innovation
3. Challenge the assumptions in everything

Okay, those aren’t actually “goals”. Maybe I was paraphrasing. However, I’m not really big on abstract concepts. Not that the things he’s working on aren’t important for his life. I prefer, personally, to tackle projects that I know will push me to new limits, teach me things and force me to change.

It’s almost the same thing as Dana… Except that I feel like my goals are “SMART” (simple, measurable, achievable, realistic and timely). I can see them through and then evaluate what I’ve actually learned and accomplished.

So, what are my 3 “big rocks”?

1. Write a book
2. Speak at at least 3 events (feel free to drop me a line if you know of any looking for speakers (ahem @ Gnomedex / BloggerCon!)
3. Teach my son to read and do basic math

Each of these is important to me for different reasons. The book is a massive project. It’ll be a huge undertaking which will, hopefully, pave the way for me to write more on a variety of subjects. It will, if nothing else, tell me if I like to write books – which is important knowledge to have.

It will also force me to confront, dream up and finish ideas. Bloggers, as a breed, are more likely to start ideas than to finish them – specifically in relation to writing. It’s my hope that the book will force me to not only finish ideas, but also ensure they are realistic as well as revolutionary. Or something.

The speaking is equally important. It’s been more than a year since I’ve spoke at an event. More than 18 months since I’ve spoken to a crowd of larger than 100, and nearly 2 years since I’ve spoke to a crowd larger than 2500.

That’s a problem for me because I love to speak. It’s also a problem because I never felt I was very good at speaking. I was good at entertaining. Okay at making a point and reasonably passable at coming off well. But I had (and probably still have) loads of bad habits. Habits I’d meant to work on.

And, now that I (apparently) have something to say, I want to ensure I can deal with those habits, get back into something I love (speaking) which will – hopefully – make writing the book easier. I find I learn more when I’m speaking. I tend to think out loud, and often I’ll have more notes after a great session than most attendees.

Yeah. Well, gotta run do some family stuff, so you’ll probably never (see Rock #1) know why I want to teach my son to read (besides the obvious).

Update: Guess this qualifies for Technorati’s 2005 Resolutions post.

How to Be a Panelist

Category: BusinessJeremy Wright @ 9:36 am

This article, by Guy Kawasaki, is rather timely, since I’ll be on a panel in just 6 weeks.

His key tips are bang on:

1. Control your introduction.
2. Entertain, don’t just inform.
3. Tell the truth—especially when the truth is obvious.
4. Err on the side of being plain and simple.
5. Never look bored.
6. Don’t look at the moderator.
7. Make casual conversation. You’re on stage, but act like you’re not.
8. Answer the question posed, but never limit yourself to the question posed.
9. Never say, “I agree with what the other panelists have said.”
10. Provide a way to get in touch with you.

Personally, I’ll need to work on 2, 4, 5, 6 (since I know the moderator well) and 7. I guess this isn’t bad for my first panel. But, then, I haven’t done a panel so I might actually have to work on all 10…

New Project Soft Launch… Wanna See?

Category: From My LifeJeremy Wright @ 9:36 pm

I’m soft launching a new project. The design sucks. I’m still working out content. Wanna see? I figure I’ll open it up tomorrow sometime. Until then, you’ll either have to wait or bribe me ;-)

My Family Was in the Tsunami?!

Category: GeneralJeremy Wright @ 8:23 am

Nothing like hearing “btw, the family who were in Sri Lanka are okay” to wake you up. I’ve been debating writing about this for the last few days but figured I had nothing to really add to the conversation. I mean, it happened in my family’s back yard (my dad, uncles and grandmother are from Sri Lanka) but I wasn’t aware of any “real” relatives who were out there.

Apparently some were visiting.

Which is enough to freak you out. I’m still not sure what can be done besides donating money, and I still don’t feel I have anything useful to add.

But feck this sucks and rocks all at the same time. Very, very, very glad they’re all okay!

Thanks to Book Reviewers

Category: Blogging, From My LifeJeremy Wright @ 4:27 pm

I just wanted to say thanks to all my reviewers. I’m not sure you’re all comfortable with me linking to you, so thanks to Tim, Patrick, Neil (my agent), Scott and Mack. Your feedback has made this project much better than it would have been on your own.

I’m hoping to have a new draft to everyone by the end of the week, in time to start sending to publishers next week sometime.

Thanks again!

How to Get Everyone’s Attention

Category: BloggingJeremy Wright @ 9:44 pm

I’m bookmarking this example for the panel I’m on in February at Northern Voice.

Slacker Manager just created a textbook example of how to get high (ish) profile bloggers and companies to notice you and want to help out.

He needs help for a new project. He pitches it well. Says where he needs help and, where he feels it’s appropriate, he calls people out. Steve Rubel. InsideBlogging. BlogAds.

All sorts of folk.

And, yes, I’d be willing to chat about being on the board of directors. I’m not 100% sold on the idea yet, but maybe that’s a good thing. I like to ask “why?” ;-)
