A Personal Blog
The Great Traffic Debate
Okay, I’ve just got to chime in on this mess.
Here’s some background. Posts were written by Biz Stone and Robert Scoble. The topic was basically how to promote your blog and get it noticed.
Whatever.
It stirred up some controversy. People got upset, like this individual. Some people even burned their ferrets in protest.
It’s really been a whole big mess.
As someone who’s cleanly broken through the “nobody” area of blogging, but never really intends to be part of the “A-List” (I figure I’m about on the F-List right now, right?), I think it’s time for me to chime in.
The “right” or “wrong”ness of promoting your blog will be a personal thing. Ultimately it’ll be up to you and your motivations for blogging, as it should be. I’ve always said I blog for me, and that is no less true today (nor will it be once I’m a paid blogger, I’d hope) than it was a year and a half ago when I started.
I’ve never really consciously done anything to promote Ensight. Maybe submitted to a few search engines back in the day, but I never left comments, insulted people, linked to others or whatever just to get traffic.
And, still, traffic has come. w00t. Whatever.
Blog for you, not for anyone else. If part of you wants to get noticed, cool, do whatever you want to get noticed. I’m not going to fault you. But, then, I don’t really count. Just remember, this whole blogging thing is an echo chamber. Someone’s going to call you on something but, really, keep it in perspective. Everything feels really big and dramatic until you try to tell your mom about it.
