Comment Spam … Still…
Sadly, the move to WordPress has not stopped Comment Spam. And, now I have to manually not approve spam. I’ll be looking for a way to fix this, but if you happen to see any, rest assured I will be dealing with it.

So, how many hours a day is the removal of comment spam eating?
Naw, nothing that bad. Maybe 10 a week. I’ll be implementing a new blacklist program this week sometime.

Oh, I figured it would be much more than that. I finally shut off comments on my blog because there were so many spammers. On a bad day I was getting ten spammers. And I have a grand total of 8764 visitors this year, lol. I guess they must have been all spammers. ;)

I used to get really bad spam on MT. Even with MT-Blacklist. Since switching to WP the volume has gone down substantially, but it’s still enough to irk me.

… Minutes after posting this I got hit with 225 spammy comments…
The filter caught them, but I still had to delete each one from the moderation queue. Really gotta fix that :D

I think Dr.Nick says “Hi Everybody” when he walks into a room.
Sorry for the unrelated comment. Miss you man; was in England for most of July so i’m way behind on your blog… gotta spend an evening and catch up!

Why not enable the posting of comments to members only?
I don’t like being forced to register for a site just to comment, so I’d hate to force my visitors to. If it ever gets to the point of me contemplating turning comments off… I’ll enable “registered only” comments first.

Jer, using WP doesn’t mean that you’ll not be spammed nor does WP claim to be SPAM proof.
Here are some plugins that’ll be of help.

http://mookitty.co.uk/devblog/category/kittens-spam-words/
Getting Simon’s blacklist will also help. Its at http://simon.incutio.com/blacklist.txt
Also, you might want to plugin some kind of redirect script that’ll prevent spammers from getting PageRank from your domain. If they can’t get something for what they SPAM, they’ll stop wasting their time. I have my own WP plugin which you can see in action at my Blog at http://blog.igeek.info/still-fresh/2004/08/14/changes-in-igsyntax-hiliter/#comments. If you want it then I’ll send over the ready to use plugin to you. :D
Also, this is a crazy idea but check this out, http://mookitty.co.uk/devblog/archives/2004/07/21/kittens-comment-pay-10/ ;)

I have a really hard time believing that comment spammers will be stopped by those redirect scripts. Yes, they prevent pagerank, but the spammers aren’t that bright and won’t necessarily know this.

I’m all for registrations honestly. I think anyone who has a comment for a blog generally would take the few seconds to sign up, reason being most blogs are still “benign” in comparison to normal sites where people view registrations as evil and an invasion of privacy, etc. Should I post the link to bugmenot.com …? guess a text mention is just fine ;)

Moving to WordPress gave me a break from comment spam for a few weeks. I was on top of the world. Then eventually I started getting it again. It’s far less than I ever had with MovableType, but I still get anywhere from 2 to 5 on an average day. Even scrambling the URL with a redirect script hasn’t stopped the spammers, so I’m looking for other options too.

Well, Vinnie, you can try the plugins I mentioned above. Also, there was a discussion at WP Support Forums or at the WP Hackers Mailing List, don’t remember which, where someone discussed making a plugin which will delete all comments which are held up for moderation. This can be a bit tricky as legit comments can also be held for moderation, like my last comment above did yesterday as it had 6 links in it.
But I think that when used in tandem with a blacklist, this can prove to be effective. I’ll look into it & hopefully try make a plugin, if I’m able to. :D

ok, Jer & Vinnie, here’s the comment killer plugin I mentioned in my last comment. http://mookitty.co.uk/devblog/category/comment-killer/
Be sure to read carefully what it says on the plugin page. I think that its a bit off target, there are some loopholes which would delete some legit comments, so I think I’ll make my own plugin, once I wrap things occupying my time at present. ;)
