Review: Spider-Man 2
I’d actually seen this on opening day, didn’t want to write the review but I figure it’s the least I can do, since I have received 3 emails asking where it was…
Here you go!
Let me first say that the first Spidey Flick was a conundrum for me. I absolutely loved it the first time I saw it. When I saw it the second time through, though, it felt really, really flat. Kind of like Daredevil the first time through ;-)
So, it was with a mixed heart that I went to see Spidey 2 on Wednesday (day off: Birthday). The first thing I was looking forward to were the opening credits, since Wired had featured the artist who did this in it’s last issue… But, to be honest, I really, really wasn’t impressed with the credits. In fact, I found the credits for Spidey 1 and Hulk much more creative.
After the credits, there was good action, good re-setup and you overall get a feel for what’s happened in the last 2 years.
Overall this movie was ultimately about the internal nightmares, struggles and weights that were killing our characters. There was some very good (creative, fun, funny, well timed) action sequences, but ultimately this was about the characters.
It was a lot like Spidey 1 was the first issue of a 6-part comic book series. This movie was 2-5. I figure Spidey 3 will be the 6th, and then extend into a new series. It was just well paced, but ultimately the middle books of any comic book series will always be about the demons the characters have to live with, and the choices they have to make.
Good stuff, very enjoyable and there were times when I was once again laughing with Spidey, sad with Spidey and right pissed off, right with Spidey.
Hell, there was even a time where I damn near literally cried. I’ll let you guess, but it was the moment where I realised that this was definitely what comic book movies are supposed to be like. Sadly, Catwoman comes out soon and will spoil the nice fuzzy feeling, or so I fear.
The only complaint I have about the Spidey movies is that there is one aspect where they don’t hold true to the comics (my friend Graham pointed this out, so all credit to him): there are no really good one-liners from Spidey.
In all the comics there were laugh out loud one-liners. I can’t actually think of one. I’m wondering if it’s because Toby has to play such a tortured soul. Dunno, guess I feel that even a dash of Wolverine’s satirical bite could lend a lot to the character.
Geeky? Hell yeah, but thankfully I was more into baseball cards than comics growing up. What can I say, I have an ‘addictive personality’. Slurpees every morning, breathing every day, cereal in front of the computer every breakfast. Habits I just can’t break.
