Review: Bourne Supremacy
Personally, I enjoyed the first Bourne movie. I’m a big Ludlum fan anyways. Some of his more recent stuff has gotten more ‘pulp fiction’-ish, but not anywhere near as bad as Tom Clancy’s stuff. So, yeah, I enjoyed the first movie. It was smart, clean (and yet gritty), not too fast paced and had a great car chase scene. Plus the heroine wasn’t gorgeous, which was a nice change.
Yet, somehow, I wasn’t hugely excited about the second Bourne movie. I guess it’s just one of those “when I look back and think about the first… I’m not excited anymore” types of moments. Same as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2, really ;-)
But, I decided to go see it on Friday with a group of friends, mainly because:
1. I go see movies on Fridays to chill out
2. There weren’t much better on, hallelujah
Honest impression? Much, much, much better than the first. I really really enjoyed it. It was smarter, more twists, grittier (which some people won’t like) and had an even better car chase scene.
I should say this, though: I’m not a huge car chase scene guy. I mean, I fast forwarded through the car chase in Starsky & Hutch (I’ll write this review in a sec). To me, the two best car chase scenes I’ve seen? The first Bourne, and Blues Brothers 2000 (the car wreck at the end). Both classics (to me).
But, I really enjoyed the chase scene in this one.
Also, Matt Damon…. You know what? The more I watch his movies, the more I can’t understand why I enjoy watching his movies. He’s very flat. I mean, diving board flat. Even his emotions and yelling and running away and crying and broken… He just doesn’t engage me. If he engages you, well great, you’ll enjoy this movie even more than I did.
But, while I laughed, I didn’t cry. I didn’t feel any of the character’s pains. Hell, I didn’t even feel like I was THERE with them. But it was still very entertaining in the way that only a decently smart movie can be. Not as good as The Game, but still good and, if nothing else, definitely worth a rental.

Interesting what you saw about Matt Damon’s acting. I haven’t thought him to be too flat. He is flat… yes, but not enough that it’s bugged me yet. Ben Affleck, on the other hand, I simply can’t stand. I have only ever enjoyed his acting when he’s in a film with Matt Damon, as he always seems to be looking for someone to play off of.

Jer, you say you are a big Ludlum fan. Have you read the Bourne Identity on which the first movie was supposed to be based? If yes, then I’m surprised that you liked the first movie. I mean its ok, its good & you’ll like it if you don’t remember the story or if you don’t know it. But I was quite dis-appointed with it, as the whole plot has been changed in the movie. It was about the assassin Carlos for which Jason Bourne was created & sent undercover but in the movie they replace him with some godforsaken dictator. And Marie was supposed to be a Canadian government official who was kidnapped by Bourne, not some scooters-for-hire salesgirl who’s offered 10grand for a ride to Paris.
This just changed the whole plot of the story & it felt like only character names & a little profile of lead character has been borrowed from the novel & otherwise its a different story alltogether.
My uncle, a great fan of Ludlum for decades, said that there was a movie earlier too, many years ago, on the same novel & that was quite lengthy(2 tapes of about 2 hours each). That was the movie which almost touched all of the original script & plot. Now I’m hunting for tapes or CDs of that movie at local parlours here & strongly wish I get it. Wish me luck.

I knew they were basically changing the whole cultural reality for the movie, though, so I took it as basically the Bourne character types set in another area of the world.
I haven’t read the other 2 yet though, so my review isn’t based on how they stack up as “book movies” :)

Well, it happens that I too haven’t read the Boune Supremacy & Bourne Ultimatum yet, though I bought them ages ago, still haven’t read any. :( So I think I’ll take the movie as it is & try to enjoy, which I think won’t be easy as the movie will continue from where it left in the last one & I doubt that they have any resemblence to the novel.
And now there’s the fourth one out, Bourne Legacy. :) I’ll try & get a copy, even if I have no time to read it at the mo’ & there are already 2 to go before I read that, but still, what the heck….. ;)
