Personally, I enjoyed the first Bourne movie. I’m a big Ludlum fan anyways. Some of his more recent stuff has gotten more ‘pulp fiction’-ish, but not anywhere near as bad as Tom Clancy’s stuff. So, yeah, I enjoyed the first movie. It was smart, clean (and yet gritty), not too fast paced and had a great car chase scene. Plus the heroine wasn’t gorgeous, which was a nice change.

Yet, somehow, I wasn’t hugely excited about the second Bourne movie. I guess it’s just one of those “when I look back and think about the first… I’m not excited anymore” types of moments. Same as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2, really ;-)

But, I decided to go see it on Friday with a group of friends, mainly because:

1. I go see movies on Fridays to chill out
2. There weren’t much better on, hallelujah

Honest impression? Much, much, much better than the first. I really really enjoyed it. It was smarter, more twists, grittier (which some people won’t like) and had an even better car chase scene.

I should say this, though: I’m not a huge car chase scene guy. I mean, I fast forwarded through the car chase in Starsky & Hutch (I’ll write this review in a sec). To me, the two best car chase scenes I’ve seen? The first Bourne, and Blues Brothers 2000 (the car wreck at the end). Both classics (to me).

But, I really enjoyed the chase scene in this one.

Also, Matt Damon…. You know what? The more I watch his movies, the more I can’t understand why I enjoy watching his movies. He’s very flat. I mean, diving board flat. Even his emotions and yelling and running away and crying and broken… He just doesn’t engage me. If he engages you, well great, you’ll enjoy this movie even more than I did.

But, while I laughed, I didn’t cry. I didn’t feel any of the character’s pains. Hell, I didn’t even feel like I was THERE with them. But it was still very entertaining in the way that only a decently smart movie can be. Not as good as The Game, but still good and, if nothing else, definitely worth a rental.
