A Personal Blog
It's … Okay…
So, I’ve spent about an hour on Orkut so far. It’s … Well, it’s okay. I’ve invited a few friends, joined a few clubs (or, “communities) and commented on a few individuals.
The practicalist in me says “now what”…
I don’t want to be one of those “new to social networking people” who invites everyone around. That’s pointless. But I honestly don’t know what to do with the rest of my time on the site…

I think this one’s better, but yeah, I’m getting “tribes vibes” too ;-)

I think this is the best yet in terms of execution, but I still think we have to see what happens when the hype wears off and it’s not just “the shiny new toy”.
I’m kind of waiting to pass judgment until people either decide Orkut can’t help them or find a way to make it help them. For now it’s really exciting more than it is practical.

If I may be so bold… Could someone please invite me so that I can check it out?

The question I have about Orkut is: what exactly does it do that e-mail and instant messanger and chat rooms don’t do already? I suppose the idea of exclusivity is appealing to some people. We shall see.

We actually have a very, very maintream popular social networking site here in Sweden, which is basically about as popular as email. Pretty much everyone who goes to school uses it to some extent.
http://www.lunarstorm.se.
It’s significantly more advanced than Orkut as the moment, but that’s not the point. Basically, these systems are not primarily communication devices, well, at least not in the email and IM sense. They are friend managment devices. CRM systems, but for your social life. It’s very complicated to manage and actually keep in touch with 100 friends without one of these systems. IM, Chat and email just doesn’t have the networking features.
